Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to fold my reMARKS in any particular way?

Not really. Just follow the guidelines to fold your reMARKS into fourths (so that it’s the general shape and size of a bookmark). From there, you can fold back and forth along those fold lines to configure the “front page” in whatever way you like (much like re-folding a newspaper to read a particular section).

I followed the instructions, but my folds don’t exactly line up with the guidelines. What’s going on?

Many misalignment issues like this are related to the printing of reMARKS. Every printer is a little different (different printable areas, margins. etc). What’s usually happening is that the printer is scaling the reMARKS up or down to fit its particular capabilities.

To solve this problem, have a look the Print dialog box that appears just prior to printing. There should be options there called '“Paper Size & Handling”. In this section, there are radio buttons such as Fit to Size (the default), Actual Size and Custom size. Selecting Actual Size should mitigate this problem.

Visit the Printing reMARKS page for more information.

What do I do with my reMARKS after I finish a book?

You can store your reMARKS inside the book itself (maybe between the front cover and first page). This way you’ll have instant access to your thoughts, meaningful quotes, and even your review when revisiting the book months or years later.

If you borrow books from the public library, you can store your reMARKs in a folder. Alternatively, you may organize your completed reMARKs into plastic binder sleeves and store them in a ring binder.

My pen is bleeding through the paper upon which I printed my reMARK. What do I do?

The simplest answer is to use a pencil instead.

Depending on the type of paper you use to print your reMARKS, ballpoint and gel type pens can bleed through, making it hard to write on the reverse side. You can always experiment with premium heavyweight paper and different pens, but reMARKS shouldn’t rely on expensive materials.

During design and testing, all prototypes of reMARKs were printed on standard copy/printer paper using a consumer-grade laser printer. Excellent results were achieved using a mechanical-style pencil. It has the form factor of a pen, but it’s erasable and there’s no bleed through on any paper.

If you find a paper/pen combination that works for you, please share with us and we’ll blog about it.

Can I use reMARKS with a Kindle?

Yes, you can. If you use a Kindle cover, it’s easy to tuck your reMARKs inside. Read more about using reMARKS with an e-reader in our blog.

I want to customize my reMARKS. Can I do that?

A customizable interface is being developed now. Keep checking my-remarks.com for updates on the progress of new products (i.e sizes, languages, etc.).

In the meantime, go to the Contact page and tell us what you want to customize and why.

reMARKS only come configured for a few genres. Why is that?

When developing reMARKS, it became a tricky design problem to be both general and specific at the same time. Prototypes had been created for other genres such as Biography, History and Short Stories. However the trick is finding what makes one genre distinct from another in order to justify a new design, and provide sections relevant to that genre.

Every reader is unique, and reMARKS shouldn’t force you into noting down specific things. Where’s the fun in that? At the same time, certain genres have definite patterns that can be surfaced in the reMARKS design, guiding you to remember characters, settings and favorite quotes.

I ran out of space on my reMARKS and I’m not finished with the book! What should I do?

No worries. You can simply print a second reMARKS page (in your desired genre) and continue your reading journey from there.

Alternatively, you can print the Supplemental reMARKS page and use that to continue your reading. The supplement was designed as a blank, generic reMARKS page ready for you to customize as you see fit. You can write in your own headings, and use the page in whatever way you need to note additional characters, complicated timelines, inspirational quotes, drawings of characters, or whatever you want.

reMARKS are just a tool; use them to build whatever you want.

Wait, this feels like work. Why am I doing this again?

reMARKS are NOT a book report. You’re NOT being graded on this (unless you’re an educator, assigning reMARKS to your students - if you are, contact us because we’d love to hear from you).

If you’re an avid reader, you want to get the most out of your reading. reMARKS are a tool to help you reference and remember your reading. Use them in whatever way you want.
